What an eventful week it has been. We concluded out Tritt-Mazing Race Fund Raiser yesterday. The kids are so proud of all of the funds they raised. The Grand Finale will be on Monday when we participate in the Tritt-Mazing Race! Our team name is the Cook's Cobras. Students will need to wear them STEAM t-shirts and get ready to attack the obstacle course like a cobra on Monday!
We are really looking forward to our picnic reward on Thursday, November 1st. This will begin at our lunch time. Students will need to bring a beach towel from home so that we can sit outside and eat in the field with our 3rd grade friends. Speaking of Thursday, we will be having a full day of STEAM learning with our next engineering challenge. This is going to be such a fun day! We have been studying the properties of multiplication this week and we will continue this next week by taking a look at the distributive property. These sound like big middle school concepts, but the most important take-away from the distributive property is that we can break apart big numbers into two smaller equations to make multiplication easier. For example 2 x 12 can be broken down into 2 x 10 and 2 x 2 which is much simpler to solve mentally. If your child is ever stuck on their homework, please remind them to see me as early as 7:20 in the morning. We can work it out together. In reading, we have been presenting our Mystery Book Reports. These were due today and we've already had so many great presentations. Anyone who did not present today will present next week. If you are registered with our class in See Saw, I can even send you a photo of your child giving their book report. I hope to see many of you out on the field this Monday to cheer on our class in the Tritt-Mazing Race. Our start time is 11:30. See you there!

This week may have been Early Release, but boy, was it full of excitement. We met our first Tritt-Mazing Race goal. We are only $102. away from our next goal too! That's only $5 per student. We will receive a movie in popcorn in the classroom if we make it. Our next county day is on Monday. Don't forget to send in those envelopes.
It was so wonderful getting the chance to sit down with each and every one of you at Parent Conferences this week. I am so thankful for the time we had to sit together and celebrate what makes each one of these kiddos so great. It means so much to me that you entrust me with your children each day. I look forward to many more conversations with you all. Please reach out to me if you have any lingering concerns or questions. Next week is a full week. We will be going on our Tellus Field Trip on Thursday, Mystery Book Reports are due on Friday, and who could forget that the Tritt-Mazing Race Finale will be on Friday! In Math, we will continue to work with multiplication and division as we study the Associate Property and continue practicing strategies. The kids have been doing great with division strategies. I am super proud of them. In Grammar, we have been studying Idioms. The kids did the funniest Idiom skits this week. Stay tuned for some hilarious performances that will be available soon on See Saw for you to see. Speaking of See Saw, I sent home a flyer this afternoon giving you details on how to view your child's See Saw portfolio if you haven't already had the chance. It is such a great way to sneak a peak at what they've been up to in class. In Social Studies, we began our first research project today. Mrs. Bates is kicking this unit off by having the students study different Native American tribes from throughout our history. The kids are researching with PebbleGo and recording their research with Kidspiration on the iPads. Ask your child what Native American tribe they began researching today. This week has been full of school spirit! Wednesday was our Tritt-Mazing Race Pep Rally to kick off our awesome PTA fund raising event. If our class meets the very first goal, the kiddos will receive Extra Recess, Popsicles, AND a Homework Pass! And that's just if we meet goal #1. Please remember that these funds go directly back to our school and are a big part of what make Tritt so Tritt-Mazing! The first collection day will be this Monday. Our team name is Cook's Cobras! Mark your calendars to come and cheer us on in the Tritt-Mazing Race on October 26th.
We had our first class auction on Thursday. The kids loved placing bids and spending their hard-earned bonus bucks. We had some great bidding wars. Many students went home with a new toy, game, book, or treat. A few decided that they wanted to keep saving their Bonus Bucks for next quarter. Thank you so much for contributing to this fun activity! We are moving into Quarter 2 and Report Cards will be available to view online this Monday. If you need another copy of how to access this via Parent Vue, please let me know. I am looking forward to discussing your child's progress with you next week. In Math next week, we will be learning strategies that help us divide. You may find that some of these strategies are new to you and your child, but our goal next week is to practice division lots of different ways in order to find one or two strategies that work for each students. In Reading, we will be talking about Character Traits as we continue with our Because of Winn Dixie novel study. Our Mystery Book report deadline is only 2 weeks away, so please encourage your child to read their Mystery book now. This way, they will have plenty of time to enjoy their book without rushing. Finally, this is just a reminder that we will have our Chick-Fil-A Day on October 18th to benefit the Rally Foundation next week. Mrs. Edwards has asked that all orders be in by October 16th. :) We are jumping right into Fall with lots of things happening in the month of October. You should have received a letter in your child's purple communication folder with your specific conference time listed on it. Please be sure to return the bottom portion of this letter, or send me an email with some days/times that you would like to reschedule for during conference week.
Mystery Book Reports were assigned on Monday. These will be due on the last Friday in October (10/26). The students will need to read a Mystery book on their level and then complete the attached book report. Finally, they will need to be prepared to present their report to the class. I've been so proud of their initiative as many of them have already communicated the book of their choice to me. They are on it! We have started our first novel study in class, Because of Winn-Dixie by Kate Di Camillo. This is such a great book and the kids are so excited to sit with their own copy as we read it together. We are really enjoying this special read-aloud time. There is a movie version of this book, but I would like to ask that you do not show the movie to your child until we have finished reading it together. Unfolding the surprises is part of the fun! In math next week, we will take a look at the ways that multiplication and division are related. From dealing a deck of Uno cards to sharing apple slices with brother or sister, dividing things equally is something kids are quick to notice. They've been doing division for years with friends and siblings without even realizing it. If you notice some of these instances of sharing equally, please be sure to point out this real-world math moment to your child. We are wrapping up our Government unit this week as we discuss how taxes help the government to provide services. When you are at the store, talk with your child about how sales tax is added to the things we buy. We will also have our first Social Studies Unit Test next week. I will be sending home a study guide on Tuesday for the students to prepare. Please see all of the upcoming events for the month of October below: 10/8 = Picture Retakes 10/10 = Walk to School Day and DASH Kickoff 10/11 = First Class Auction (This is a day sooner than I mentioned in my previous email) 10/11 = Early Release Day Oct 15th - Oct. 19th = Conference Week (Early Release All Week) 10/25 = Field Trip to the Tellus Museum 10/26 = Mystery Book Reports are due 10/26 = DASH Day |
