We have officially completed the first month of Third grade, and boy did it fly by! This week we spent a lot of time focusing on how to find books on our level this week. We talked today about setting a goal for reading and letting our book choices help us in inching closer to that goal. And speaking of books, the students were assigned their first book report on Wednesday. Please take some time over the long weekend to help your child select a book for their book report. You can even make this something special by taking a trip to the book store or library.
In Math, we have been working hard on addition strategies and began looking at subtraction today. Having that addition and subtraction fact fluency is so important and has such an impact on a child's confidence when tackling larger numbers and equations. I strongly encourage you to practice math facts with your child using flashcards, apps, or any games you come up with. I promise you, it's worth taking the time! We will begin testing next week with the COGAT. We will test Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday mornings. All students will participate in morning run on testing days, so be sure that your child wears tennis shoes on those days. We will also have no homework on testing day, aside from getting a good night's rest and eating a nutritious breakfast.

The month of August is flying by and this week seems like it moved at warped speed. We worked hard to explain our thinking with new addition strategies this week. I am so proud of these little mathematicians and their can-do attitudes. We are going to spend next week really strengthening these addition skills and applying them to word problems and building our fluency. In reading, we are working on building our reading stamina. We will put our new reading strategies to the test have our first reading comprehension quiz on Wednesday. We will also wrap up our Rocks and Minerals unit next Friday as we get ready to launch our first Social Studies unit, Civics. The kids loved looking at each other's rock collections this afternoon, and I did too!
Don't forget that next week will be our first Early Release day. Dismissal will begin at 12:20. :) It's been an eventful week in Room 104 (Our Classroom)! We started the week meeting an actor and Tritt alum, Miles Truitt. Miles spoke to the 3rd grade students about how reading and perseverance are essential to succeeding as an actor. On Tuesday, we visited the ILC for orientation. We are officially ready to check out library books!
The students have been having fun learning to round and practicing their fact fluency skills as we prepare for our next big unit in math - Addition and Subtraction strategies. We received some fun, new flexible seating options for our classroom and the kids are loving their reading spots as we work on building our independent reading stamina. We are digging deep into Rocks and Minerals in science this week. The students have really enjoyed finding different rocks around the school and trying to identify them. Some of our favorites are mica and quartz. Next Friday, I will be inviting the students to bring in their rocks and minerals collections (if they have one). These can be gems they've panned for or favorite rocks from their backyard. This is completely optional, but it will be fun to see what everyone shares. Picture Day is coming up this Thursday. Our scheduled time is at 11:12 (thankfully, before recess and lunch). Everyone bring their brightest smiles. :) Click here to sign up for Remind texts. You can also text @laurencoo to the number 81010. I will be sending out some fun pictures from a game we played in math today. It's great for practicing mental math and addition fluency. Ask your child to show you how to play. You'll need one dice, a piece of paper, and something to write with. What a fun, sticky, science-y week we've had! The kids have been learning about the Scientific Method as we get ready to launch our first science unit. We did an experiment this week to find out what happens when gummy bears are left overnight in water. The results were a surprise right up to the end! We started our Math Center rotations this week and took our first math quiz today on Place Value. The kids were a little nervous about taking their quiz, but after a little pep talk, they showed their thinking with confidence and accuracy and I am super proud of them! Today we completed our first entry in our Parent Journal. This is a special journal that your child will bring home every other Friday that you will read over the weekend and respond back to. This is such a special opportunity for you and your child to share with each other, and I hope it will be a great keepsake for you when the school year is through. Please be sure to read the instructions on the inside of the journal and respond back by Tuesday. The pictures in today's Remind text show a really cool moth with noticed when we were coming back from Art today. Ask your child if they remember what kind of moth it is. We were so amazed by his size and his cool camouflaged wings.
Click here to sign-up for our Remind texts: https://www.remind.com/join/laurencoo What a wonderful short week it has been! I have so enjoyed getting to know your children this week as we begin building our classroom community and gearing up for all of the exciting things we'll be learning this year. Ask your child to tell you about the Tiger PAWS Promise, The STEAM Cup Tower Challenge, and the balloons! I look forward to seeing you all at Open House on Tuesday night. We've been working hard to share some special work with you. ;)
Be sure to keep an eye out for your child's purple Take-Home folder and Planner each night. The students are practicing staying organized by writing down their homework at the end of every day. Please remember to initial each night. This helps your child to know that we are all working together to help them keep up with their assignments. Don't forget to join our Remind group to stay up-to-date with our class. I sent out a picture this afternoon of our first Friday. Please let me know if you did not receive it or are having trouble with the Remind app. Click on the link here. |
