We have made it to Spring Break! Though I do love the bright colors, beautiful weather, and excitement Spring, I kind of wish this year would slow down. It's going much too fast!
We had a great week this week and it started off with our field trip to Pope High School. The kids had a great time and really enjoyed interacting with (and high-fiving) the high schoolers. We learned a lot about animals, strawberry DNA, engineering, and constellations. Our Diversity Week presentation was so engaging too. Our presenter did an awesome presentation using shadow puppets to tell folk tales. The students got to get in on the action too. It was awesome! With April beginning on Monday, we only have one more full week to prepare for Milestones which begin on April 16th. We have been practicing reading and responding to passages in class as well as working with the online tools. If your child is still feeling anxious about testing on the laptops, you may want to try this online test tools link where they can get some more practice just seeing how it all works. http://gaexperienceonline.com *Remember to select EOG Spring Main (Green) Online Tools Training *Note that this tools training is for 3-5 so the tools will be the same, but some sample passages may not be specific to 3rd grade. It's just tools practice. I hope your child will find some time to pick up a good book over the break. To encourage them in this, I have a little Spring Break challenge. Over the break, I would love for you to send me a photo (through SeeSaw or email) of your child reading in a really cool/creative/unexpected place. When we come back from the break, the kids will get to share their photo with the class during Morning Meeting. I can't wait to see what they come up with! Another fun way to keep those skills strong over the break would be for your child to use Prodigy to practice their math skills. They've had a lot of fun with this in class. You can download the app for free or use the online platform which can be found on my Math Links page. When we return in April, we will be reviewing language arts, reading and writing standards for the Georgia Milestones. I have some fun games planned to make it feel less like test-prep and to show what we know. We will also be reviewing multiplication, division, and word problems as well. Here are some important upcoming dates for April: 4/16 Tue) = ELA Section 1 4/17 (Wed) = ELA Section 2 4/18 (Thu) = ELA Section 4/19 = STEAM Day 4/24 (Wed) = Math Section 1 4/25 (Thu) = Math Section 2 4/25 = Donut Day 4/26 = Arts in Ed Day 4/29 (Mon) = Invention Convention Projects Due

We are only a few weeks away from Milestones and we have officially covered all reading and math standards. We will begin reviewing next week starting with Place Value, Rounding, Addition and Subtraction. In reading, our big focus will be re-reading the text to look for evidence that supports our answer.
Next week we will be taking our trip to Pope High School. Please remember to wear gray STEAM shirts for our trip to Pope. We will be eating lunch at school, so there will be no need for sack lunches. We will also be celebrating Diversity Week next week. We will get to hear from a speaker on Wednesday who will be speaking to us about Burma, China, and Indonesia. Speaking of Field Trips, we will be visiting West Rock to see recycling in action on May 8th. I will be sending out permission forms for this trip next week. We are so excited to get to visit a working recycling facility. There is no charge for this field trip. Special thanks for PTA for covering the cost of our buses! As we enter into 4th quarter and get closer to Spring Break, now is the time when students start to get a little amnesia about the Tiger PAWS promise and classroom expectations. Please be sure to check your child's behavior log each night. When something is written in the behavior log, please talk with your child about this and be sure to initial by that day. Knowing that we are all in communication about these behaviors is so important to keeping students accountable. I want them to enter 4th grade next year with a sense of personal responsibility and knowing that their hard work pays off in great ways! Time is really flying these days! It's hard to believe that today is the last day of Quarter 3. We will be pushing full steam ahead in Quarter 4 to learn everything we can before the year ends. With Milestones fast approaching, we will also be doing lots of review in preparation. My number one goal going into testing is that these kiddos feel confident in how much they have learned this year - and they have learned SO much! I believe in them and cannot wait for them to show what they know!
In Math this week, we revisited word problems with multiple steps. This standard can be tricky because it not only requires good computation skills, but also good comprehension skills. Encourage your child to talk it out and make a picture model in their mind (or on paper) when they are working through problems in homework. Next week, we will be moving into geometry as we connect quadrilaterals and polygons to what we have studied on area and perimeter. Don't forget to keep drilling those multiplication facts as well. We will have a weekly multiplication fact check each Friday until the end of the year. In Reading, we are continuing our novel study of Peter Pan. The kids have loved reading this book and are begging that we keep going with each completed chapter. From time to time, I will ask your child to read their favorite chapter that we've read so far for homework. This is a great way for you to see how they are comprehending this grade-level text. With the end of the quarter being today, you will be receiving report cards via Parent Vue soon. Remember that we will not be sending home a paper copy of the report card this semester. If you have not already, please be sure to set-up your Parent Vue account so that you can see how your child is doing in class. Let me know if you need some help setting yours up. We had lots of STEAM-y fun this week with our Recycling PSAs on Wednesday and our MaKey MaKey word problems project on Friday. This kids loved using coding to make word problems interactive. Check out our latest posts on See Saw to see what your child created! We are only two weeks away from Spring Break and so much is coming up. See the dates below: 3/15 (Today) - Food Truck Friday 3/25 - Pope Field Trip 3/27 - Diversity Week presentation 4/1 - 4/5 - Spring Break 4/16 - 4/25 - Georgia Milestones 4/19 - STEAM Day 4/26 - Art in Education Day 4/29 - Invention Convention projects due We have had an awesome week of exploration as we have rotated through 7 different classrooms (including mine) to learn about explorers to the New World. The students had the opportunity to learn from all of the 3rd grade teachers about a different explorers and what obstacles they faced when travelling to the New World.
In math, we have spent a lot of Quarter 3 covering time, measurement, and fractions. Next week, we will dive back into multiplication and division as we study missing variables. Please continue practicing multiplication facts at home with your child. By the end of the year, your child should know all of their facts 1 - 10 by memory. I have started assessing them weekly on how many facts they can answer on a timed test. The goal for the end of the year is 100 mixed facts in 7 minutes. Your child may have told you about our new math game, Prodigy. This online game allows students to practice many different math skills in a fun gaming platform. I also have tons of links on my website to review and practice all of our math standards. We have lots of things happening next week. On Monday, we will visit the Computer Lab to practice using the online platform that our Georgia Milestones test will be on. That's right, it is time for us start preparing for the brave new world of Milestones testing on the computer (see what I did there?). You should have received a green testing schedule in purple folders today detailing the days in April when we will be testing. I know they kids are going to do great. We will also have our next STEAM Day on Wednesday. This STEAM Day is also open to visitors. If you decide to stop by for a visit, please be aware that 3rd grade will be at Specials until 9:00. We will be in the classroom at 9:00 if you're in the building and would like to pop in and see progress on our Recycling STEAM projects. The STEAM Showcase ends at 9:30. Don't forget that this will be an Early Release Day as well. We have a great opportunity for the 3rd grade students at Tritt to participate in several hands on science learning rotations right down the road from us at Pope High School. On Monday, March 25th we will take buses over to Pope around 9:00 am and spend the morning exploring our Science standards. Some of the rotations include: zoology, chemistry, astronomy, graphic arts, microscope lab, engineering, and virtual reality. We will return to Tritt around 12:30 and eat lunch. Please look for the green permission form (in your child's folder on Monday) and sign and return the form as soon as possible. There is no cost for this trip. Finally, we will have our Quarter 3 Class Auction this Friday. Remind your child to bring in an item they would like to contribute to the Auction. Time to spend those hard-earned Bonus Bucks! |
