Yesterday was the 100th day of school and that got us wondering... if we are 100 days older now than we were on the first day of school, what will life be like when we are 100 years old? The kids had a great time imagining what life will be like in 2109 or 2110. We even had a glimpse into the future as we took photos in the aging booth app. Take a peak at their stories and pictures on See Saw.
In math this week, we have been comparing fractions and finding equivalent fractions. One strategy we have worked in is comparing a fraction to 1/2. For example 4/5 is more than half because 4 is more than half of 5. 2/6 is less than half because 2 is less than half of 6. We will keep practicing this skill next week as we continue with equivalent fractions. I have added some new fraction practice to the Math Links tab on this site. There are some great games on there for each math domain. Don't forget to continue practicing multiplication facts at home as well. I have been pushing the students to read a little out of their comfort zone this week. With this being the mid-point of the year, sometimes kids can find themselves in a reading rut. I want to introduce them to new books and genres to reignite their excitement for reading. I also want to start tracking what the kiddos are reading at home. Be on the lookout for a Reading Log that will come home next week. I will be checking this to see what and how much reading students are reading at home. Students are encouraged to bring their independent reading books home each night as well. The best way to become a better reader is to read, read, read! A yellow paper was sent home today explaining the new procedures for putting percentage scores on assignments and quizzes done in class. Please take a moment to read this over. We will continue to use grades 1 - 3 on our standards-based report cards, but being able to see the grade in this way will help ease the transition to 4th grade. Let me know if you have any questions about this. Lots of fun events are coming up in the next few weeks at Tritt. See the list below: Monday - No School - Martin Luther King Jr Holiday Thursday - Tritt's Greatest Show Talent Show @ the Pope Auditorium 1/31 - Penguin Parade projects are due and STEAM Day 2/1 - SuperBowl Friday (more details to come) Happy New Year to everyone! It is so hard to believe that we are over halfway through the school year and already into Quarter 3. With all of these fractions to consider, it makes sense that we are jumping into fractions to start off math this quarter. The students have been learning how to represent fractions of a whole, of a set, and on a number line. We will begin comparing fractions next week and finding equivalent fractions as well.
In reading, we have been studying plot, setting, and theme. Themes can be hard to determine, but I am so proud of how well the students did with it this week. Ask your child to tell you the themes in our story of the week, Feathers in the Wind. The plot may remind you of a story you were told growing up. We have also begun reading Mr. Popper's Penguins as our class read aloud. Each student has their own copy and they are so excited get into a new class novel. Be on the lookout for our next reading project in purple folders. The students will be creating a penguin out of recycled materials to bring in and share with the class. Our projects will be on display in the ILC during the month of February too. Report cards went live on ParentVue today. If you forgot where to find this, visit the following link: https://parentvue.cobbk12.org/ and login using the information you registered with. We will not be sending home paper report cards this time around, so please take a look at your child's grades on ParentVue. We had an amazing presentation today from West Rock. They are one of the largest recycling companies in the nation and located right here in Marietta. We are going to be kicking off a year-long STEAM project in recycling this month and we'll even get to visit a recycling plant in May. More details to come. A few reminders about upcoming events: -Target classes resume on Tuesday - No School on Monday the 21st (MLK Jr Holiday) -Penguin projects due January 31st |
