Today kicked off our year-long STEAM project as we begin learning about where our trash goes and how we can reduce our waste at Tritt. The kids were so excited to research this project and their minds are already churning with ideas and solutions. Check out some of their research on SeeSaw today.
We have been working hard on addition and subtraction strategies this week as well. You may notice some new strategies coming home in homework for these two operations. Please encourage your child to walk you through these new strategies. If they don't understand, that is okay right now. These strategies take practice and we are going to persevere until we have at least a few different ones that they feel comfortable with when problem solving. CogAT Testing will take place next week. We will be testing Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday and testing begins first thing in the morning. Please try and get your child to school no later than 7:30 on these days. This will give them time to get settled, participate in a little morning exercise, and get mentally ready. Testing should last until approximately 8:45 each day next week. I will not be assigning any written homework for the week, but I will be asking that your child get a good night's rest, eat a good breakfast, and arrive on time for school. Here is a look at what we will be learning next week: Reading: Using text to describe character traits Writing: Personal Narrative Writing Part 2 Math: Word Problems (Addition and Subtraction) Grammar: Plural and Abstract Nouns *We will not have a new vocabulary list this week due to our testing schedule. Testing Dates: 9/4 - 9/6 = CogAt 9/9 - 9/12 = ITBS

This week really has us getting into a groove. The kids have done such a great job adjusting to the routines of the classroom. They've been working hard in their math groups and there have been some great moments of collaboration with our writing partners. I'm so proud of these learners!
You should a note about our first Moby Max homework assignment in your child's planner. The kids should be familiar with how to navigate to the Moby Max site via my website. Thank you for helping your child log in and practice their skills at home. We will have a reading homework assignment in Moby Max next week. I met with our awesome Room Parents yesterday, Jessica, Stephanie, and Susan. You should be hearing from them soon about volunteer opportunities. I am so excited for our Mystery Readers to begin visiting the class. Thank you so Miss Susan for being our first guest reader. The kids loved hearing The 500 Hats of Bartholemew Cubbins! Our first Early Release Day and our first STEAM Day will both be coming up next week. Remember that Early Release is Wednesday and school will end two hours early at 12:30. Our Lunch and Specials times will be changed due to this shortened schedule. Take a look at what we will be learning next week: Reading: Character Traits and Motivations Writing: Publishing and Beginning New Personal Narrative Stories Grammar: Plural and Abstract Nouns Math: Subtraction Strategies Social Studies: Finishing up Branches of Government STEAM: Recycling What a wonderful second week of school it has been. The kiddos have done such a great job demonstrating the rules and routines of the classroom. Already, we are getting into a groove. We learned so much this week from practicing rounding to thinking about what we read. We even completed out first math work stations this week. I hope you've had the chance to check SeeSaw for a peek into this great week!
Tonight your child will be bringing home their Parent Journal for the first time. This is a journal that will come home with your child each Friday where they will write a letter to you about their week. You are encouraged to write back to them on the opposite page and then your child will bring this back on Monday. It will be a special keepsake to you by the end of this year. You'll love going back and reading their writing and seeing how they've grown. More details on this will be on the inside-front cover of your child's journal in hot pink. This afternoon, we visited the LLC (Library Learning Commons) and had our first library orientation. Your child will now be able to visit the LLC in the mornings before 7:45 if they need to check out or renew a book. There is something for everyone in the LLC. I can't wait to see what they fill their book boxes with. Continuing with our fabulously full Friday, we had a Strong 4 Life Pep Rally to encourage healthy habits. These healthy habits are: drink water, fill 1/2 of your plate with fruits and veggies, limit screen time, and be active. The kids had a blast!
