We have had a wonderful week learning about Native American tribes. The students had the opportunity to learn about a different tribe from each third grade teacher. Today, your child should have brought home some artifacts from their rotations. Help them unpack their portfolio and tell you about what they learned.
In math this week, we used Cheez-Its to create area models and find the area of rectangles. The students also created area models and explained their thinking using an app called ChatterPix to actually make their area models talk. The results made us all giggle. Take a look at your child's See Saw this week for some math silliness. :) In reading, we have been making inferences. The kiddos have loved trying to solve clues in text to create new understandings about the stories we read. Remember, the best way to grow as a reader is to read as much as possible. Please take some time over the break to take your child to the book store or library to find some new titles to fall in love with. Travelling for the holidays? Encourage your child to pack a good book to take on the trip. We celebrated Because of Winn Dixie by watching the movie in the classroom this afternoon. This book has been a special one for our class. We had a special snack of pickles (and birthday cupcakes) to go along with it. With Thanksgiving coming up, we sure have been feasting this week it seems. ;) I hope you all have a wonderful Thanksgiving and enjoy spending time with your families. I know that I am looking forward to sunshine, pumpkin pie, family-time, and waking up after the sun for a few days. I am so very thankful for the opportunity to teach this sweet class.

I am so very proud of our class for their generous contributions to the Canned Food Drive this week. We have exceeded our class goal with 105 cans! The drive ends next Tuesday, so there is time left to send in more. The top class earns a special treat. Thank you so much for all of your donations. What an awesome opportunity for our kids to help those in need.
In math this week, we studied multiplying numbers by multiples of 10. The kids did a great job with this concept! Next week, we will begin learning how to find the area of rectangles using tiling. We will also take our 5s Facts multiplication quiz next Thursday. Next week we are diving into our Native American Tribes study. The kids will have the opportunity to rotate through all seven 3rd grade classrooms where they will learn about the tribes of a specific region from each teacher. The students started today with their homeroom teachers, which means our class got to learn about the Inuit tribes of North America from me. Ask your child about dunking their hands in icy water today. We finished up the book Because of Winn Dixie this week. The kids and I both were sad too see it end. What a wonderful book! Kate DiCamillo is an excellent author. If you are looking for a good book to cozy up and read with your child, I highly recommend her. The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane is another title of hers that I just love. We will be watching the movie version of Because of Winn Dixie next Friday to compare the book and the movie. Coming up next week: Monday - Veterans Day Program (4th and 5th Only) - We do not have a speaker scheduled to come to our classroom, but if you or a veteran you know would like to come and share with us next week, please let me know. Tuesday - Canned Food Drive Ends Thursday - The Bravest Worrier author's visit November 19 - 23 - Thanksgiving Break We have had a STEAM-tastic start to the month of November! Looking back on this week, it is hard to believe that we were able to fit the TrittMazing Race, Halloween, Class Picnic, and STEAM Day all into 5 days! We did our Earth Dwellings STEAM Challenge on Thursday where we learned a lot about the toll that erosion can take on homes and the people in them. The students used the Stop Motion app on the iPads to document their builds from start to finish. Be sure the check your child's See Saw account and let them show you how their build turned out.
We are wrapping up our novel study from the book Because of Winn Dixie. What a wonderful time we have had reading this book. Ask your child to tell you about their favorite character (besides Winn Dixie of course!). In math, we will be learning how to multiply with multiples of 10 (ex. 30 x 2 = 3 groups of 10 times 2). We are also beginning to memorize multiplication facts for weekly timed quizzes. So far, the students have been tested on their 0s, 1s, and 2s. We will take our 10s quiz next week. In Social Studies, we have begun researching about American Indian tribes with Mrs. Bates in the ILC. The students compiled their research on KidSpriration and posted these to See Saw. It has been so neat to watch them research and share what they are learning. It ties nicely into our writing unit which is Informational writing as well. The Canned Food Drive has begun and will run from now until November 13th. Please bring in any non-perishable items with your child. They will earn Bonus Bucks for each item that they bring in and our sister school, Labelle Elementary, will get some much needed food and toiletries for those in need. Thank you once again for all of your contributions to our classroom. Thanks to your support, PTA has provided our classroom with 2 additional iPads, which gives us enough for small group. This is huge for our math centers! Please be reminded that students will not have school this Tuesday due to Election Day. As a school-wide incentive to encourage voting, we are asking students to bring in their parents' "I'm a Georgia Voter" stickers on Wednesday. Be sure to save yours! Veteran’s Day Celebration at Tritt Elementary Do you know a Veteran that plays a role in life of a Tritt Student? We would like to invite them to join us in a celebration program in their honor on November 12th from 8:15am-9:00am. You will hear from our Boy Scouts, Tritt Tiger Chorus, and a Keynote Speaker! We are looking forward to thanking the Veteran’s for their service. If your Veteran is able to join us, we ask that you fill out this online RSVP to ensure we have enough space set up for all of our guests. There will be a light breakfast following the program. In addition, we are compiling a picture slideshow of all Veterans represented at Tritt Elementary. If you have a picture of a Veteran, whether they are able to attend our event or not, please send it to [email protected]. Please note in your email who is in the picture, their branch of service, and their relationship to Tritt Elementary. For example, Commander Jonathan Ford, Navy, Father of Griffin and Rachel Ford. If you have any questions, please reach out to assistant principal Adam Casey. |
