The penguins came marching in today. The kids were so excited to share their projects. I am so proud of their hard work! The penguins are on display in the LLC and will remain there for the month of February.
We will be taking a field trip to West Rock Recycling on March 16th. We are so excited to see recycling in action! Well, at long last, winter has finally made an appearance. The temperatures got very cold to start off this week and that has made for some chilly recess times. Please know that we make every effort to go outside for recess each day (weather permitting). When the weather is below 40 degrees, we will stay out for no longer than 15 minutes, but we always try to go outside. I say all this to ask that you please encourage your child to wear a coat (more than just a jacket or a hoodie) to school each day. It is so good for them to get outside and run around, just not in shorts and a sweatshirt when its this this cold. :)
We have begun learning about measurement to the nearest quarter inch this week. This concept can be a little challenging for students, but we are working on connecting it to what we have already learned about fractions. We will continue practicing this next week as we plot measurement data on a line plot. I have added an assignment on Prodigy that students can do at home to practice this skill. Here is a look at what we will be learning next week: Reading: Citing Text Evidence Writing: Opinion Writing Math: Line Plots and Measurement to the Nearest 1/4 Inch Science: Animal Adaptations STEAM: Recycling Public Service Announcements Vocabulary: ripe, irate, legible, embrace, seek Finally, mark your calendar for next Thursday (1/30). The Tritt Talent Show is at 6:00 at Pope Auditorium. Doors open at 5:30. Come and cheer on your fellow classmates and Mrs. Cook! I hope to see you there. We are getting back into the routine this week. After having the first week of the semester to get back in school-mode, these kiddos have really come on strong!
With 4th grade in the horizon, one important task we have as third grade teachers is to help students make the shift from lower elementary to upper elementary school. With this in mind, we will begin adding a percentage to all graded papers going home. This will give you an idea of how your child will be graded in 4th grade when students move towards a traditional report card. A letter will be going home in your child's purple folder about this today. Be on the lookout! The kids have been doing a great job of bringing their chapter books to class and making time for independent reading. Thank you so much for supporting this at home. Tritt will be participating in Six Flags Read to Succeed again this year. Your child will have the chance to log some of their at-home reading hours and possibly earn a free ticket to Six Flags. This purple sheet will also be in your child's folder today. The students have been given their new behavior log for Quarter 3. This orange sheet is in the back sleeve of your child's folder. Please be sure to check these and initial when your child has to add something to their log. This really helps me to reinforce classroom expectations. Our penguin projects will be due in two short weeks. I hope your child has had the chance to get started on this. January 31st will be here before we know it! We started our next novel study on the book Mr. Popper's Penguins. This kids are really enjoying Mr. Popper and Captain Cook and all of their antics! This book has some great vocabulary in it too, which we are always trying to build on. In your child's purple folder today, you will find instructions for our next at-home project. Your child will create their own penguin from recyclable materials. We just love seeing the creativity of the students on this one! Our penguins will even be displayed in the LLC for the month of February! The due date for this project is January 31st. Be sure to read the purple handout for more information about the project requirements. We also had a visit from the Recycling Team at SunTrust Park today. The kids rotated through 4 awesome sessions where they learned all about all of the work that goes into reducing waste at the ballpark. They are now official Green Path Team members too! :) Here is a look at what is coming up next week: Reading: Making Inferences Writing: Opinion Writing Math: Comparing and Equivalent Fractions Grammar: Comparative and Superlative Adjectives Science: Animal Adaptations Vocabulary: partial, conceal, quarrel, blunt, elaborate Upcoming Events: January 21st - Martine Luther King Jr. holiday - No School January 31st - Tritt Talent Show @ Pope Auditorium |
