We are jumping right into Fall with lots of things happening in the month of October. You should have received a letter in your child's purple communication folder with your specific conference time listed on it. Please be sure to return the bottom portion of this letter, or send me an email with some days/times that you would like to reschedule for during conference week.
Mystery Book Reports were assigned on Monday. These will be due on the last Friday in October (10/26). The students will need to read a Mystery book on their level and then complete the attached book report. Finally, they will need to be prepared to present their report to the class. I've been so proud of their initiative as many of them have already communicated the book of their choice to me. They are on it! We have started our first novel study in class, Because of Winn-Dixie by Kate Di Camillo. This is such a great book and the kids are so excited to sit with their own copy as we read it together. We are really enjoying this special read-aloud time. There is a movie version of this book, but I would like to ask that you do not show the movie to your child until we have finished reading it together. Unfolding the surprises is part of the fun! In math next week, we will take a look at the ways that multiplication and division are related. From dealing a deck of Uno cards to sharing apple slices with brother or sister, dividing things equally is something kids are quick to notice. They've been doing division for years with friends and siblings without even realizing it. If you notice some of these instances of sharing equally, please be sure to point out this real-world math moment to your child. We are wrapping up our Government unit this week as we discuss how taxes help the government to provide services. When you are at the store, talk with your child about how sales tax is added to the things we buy. We will also have our first Social Studies Unit Test next week. I will be sending home a study guide on Tuesday for the students to prepare.
