Holy Moly! It is May! This month is full of so many exciting things, but the thing that I am feeling so excited about right now, is how much these kids are growing. We have been going back to concepts we taught earlier in the year, and it is so rewarding to see them put it all together in new ways.
We studied the early American colonists this week. The kids dove deep into non-fiction texts to learn about what life was like for the people living in Plymouth and Jamestown. We have had some great conversations about how different life was for the settlers. Our poetry skills were in full bloom this week as we wrote poems about the colors and signs of Spring. We are planning a special celebration to honor these 3rd grade poets on May 20th. Parents are invited to our 3rd grade Coffee House! This will take place on that Monday (the last Monday of the year) at 10:30. I will be sending out a Sign-Up Genius soon for everyone to sign up to bring in a treat. In Math, we are continuing to drill multiplication and division facts. Those 7s, 8s, and 9s can be the trickiest, so keep practicing these facts with your child. Our final Multiplication Drill of the year will be next Friday (5/10). The goal for a 3rd grader is to solve 100 multiplication problems in 7 minutes (1 - 10 Facts). When asking a wise 4th grader what the most important math skill would be to work on for rising 4th graders, the answer was an emphatic "Multiplication Facts!". So keep practicing them! We have big things coming up next week. On Wednesday, we will be going on our Field Trip to West Rock Recycling. We will be leaving the school right at 9:00 and returning around noon. Our lunch time is 12:38, so we will be back in plenty of time to eat lunch at school. No sack lunches needed. West Rock is a working recycling factory, so we have some very specific guidelines about our behavior and dress code for the safety of all of the students on the trip. They are as follows: 1. Students must wear tennis shoes. NO OPEN-TOED SHOES ALLOWED. Students who do not wear closed-toed shoes will not be able to go on the trip and will have to stay back at Tritt. 2. Students must wear their STEAM shirts or GRAY shirts. 3. Students must follow the Tiger PAWS Promise. Of course it goes without saying, but it's still a must. :) Field Day is also coming up on next Friday. Our Field Day will take place from 12:00 to 2:00. We are still in need of volunteers to help with our Field Day stations. Please consider volunteering for this super-fun day. I will share more details with you about Field Day next week. Finally, Camp Learned-A-Lot is coming up the week after next. Don't forget those special deliveries are due next Friday. ;) Here is a list of the many events coming up next week: 5/8 = Field Trip to West Rock 5/10 = Field Day 5/10 = Camp Learned-A-Lot items due 5/13 - 5/17 = Camp Learned-A-Lot 5/20 = Poetry Coffee House (10:30 - 11:30) 5/21 and 5/22 = Early Release Days 5/22 = Last Day of School
